As Kentucky operates under a new offense led by new coordinator Liam Coen, the Wildcats will reportedly be without a veteran wide receiver.

UK wide receiver Akeem Hayes has entered the transfer portal after he made four catches in the 2020 season, according to Matt Zenitz of AL.com. Hayes appeared in seven games, and hauled in one touchdown in 2020. Hayes is the cousin of former Oklahoma Sooners star and current Baltimore Raven Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

The news is not entirely surprising for those who have followed UK closely. A Sea of Blue reported after the win over Mississippi State that Hayes sent out two tweets showing his frustration about his role in the offense, but then quickly deleted them. It noted that he was an early key target, but couldn’t build on that production. In Kentucky’s first two games, Hayes hauled in four passes for 54 yards and the only receiving touchdown a Wildcat has this season. Entering Week 3, he ranked second on the team in receiving yards and yards per catch (13.5). But didn’t register any more yardage after that.

Hayes redshirted his first season in Lexington, 2018, and has since collected nine catches in his career with two touchdowns at UK.

With Coen’s arrival, UK’s wide receiver position has already seen some turnover. It’s expected that veteran Josh Ali and Nebraska transfer Wan’Dale Robinson would be key players, but the Wildcats also brought in three recruits at the position.
