The New York Jets lost starting quarterback Geno Smith on Tuesday when teammate IK Enemkpali broke his jaw.

Former Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen thinks the famous green uniforms suit him well, and immediately petitioned the Jets for the job via Twitter.

In case you missed it, here’s a quick backstory on Smith’s injury: Enemkpali allegedly bought Smith a plane ticket worth about $600 to attend the former’s summer football camp in Pflugerville, Texas. When Smith had to cancel due to the death of a close friend, the linebacker demanded the money as a sort of refund, ESPN reported.

When Smith had yet to pay, Enemkpali confronted him in the locker room and smashed him in the jaw, breaking it in two places. Enemkpali is off the team, while Smith is out for at least six weeks, and probably more.

Now back to Lorenzen. “The Hefty Lefty” threw for 10,354 yards and accounted for 90 total touchdowns at Kentucky from 2000-03. He hasn’t played in an NFL game since Sept. 9, 2007 — for the rival New York Giants.

He continued to play football all the way through the 2013-14 Continental Indoor Football League season. Lorenzen suited up when, as the general manager of the Northern Kentucky River Monsters, he couldn’t find a quarterback.

Lorenzen sells office technology equipment for a company called ProSource and recently returned to Lexington, Ky. He told Saturday Down South in September that he’s done playing football, but it sounds like he’s willing to suit up again — provided the Jets want a 34-year-old quarterback who weighed 320 pounds the last time he played and has been out of the NFL for seven years.

It’s too bad Rex Ryan no longer coaches the Jets, right?
