Kentucky owns the worst active losing streak to one opponent in college football with 31-straight losses to Florida, and they have a chance to break that streak on Saturday.

The Wildcats are coming off of an unimpressive 35-20 Week 1 victory over Central Michigan, where they turned the ball over four times and were forced to make a quarterback change due to bad play.

While Week 1’s win was nothing to brag about, coach Mark Stoops thinks it can still serve as a building block that will help Kentucky have a chance to beat Florida on Saturday.

“It’s a big game, we have to make a lot of improvements. I was really pleased with some of the things we did this past week in the opener, but we have a lot of improvement to make,” said Stoops.

“I think I have a much better understanding of our team now than I did going into Week 1. Each team you think you have a good feel for what they are going to do and how they are going to play, but it usually doesn’t work out that way. The first game of the year is big and it’s good to get that one under the belt.”

Starting quarterback Terry Wilson threw two interceptions last Saturday, while Gunnar Hoak came in and threw the Wildcats’ only passing touchdown of the game. Stoops says he knew quarterback play was something that was going to take more time to develop.

“We are breaking in inexperienced quarterbacks and you know, going through some growing pains there, but across the board we need to improve some things,” he said. “Our quarterbacks really made some big gains in between scrimmage one and scrimmage two and hopefully they are going to do the same thing between game one and game two.”

Now under Dan Mullen, Florida looks like a team that is on the rise, and coach Stoops realizes that.

“This game is important to us this year because we are trying to make moves,” said Stoops. “We are an improved football team, we are trying to win more games than we did a year ago and we have a good enough team to do that. We played Florida really well for the most part two years ago down in the Swamp, but it didn’t turn out very good, we got off to a very slow start, we got our quarterback hurt and we were in for a long day. But outside of that, we played very, very close games and had a great opportunity last year.”

When asked about the losing streak to Florida, Stoops had a pretty concise answer:

“These kids weren’t even born 31 years ago, so we really can’t worry much about that.”
