LSU’s quarterback competition could get more complicated, and that might not be a bad thing for the Tigers.

Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow, a graduate with two years of eligibility remaining, tweeted Tuesday that he’ll transfer. He reportedly will visit LSU this weekend, after Cincinnati.

LSU has three inexperienced quarterbacks competing to be the starter, and no one stood out enough in spring practice to be named the starter. Additional competition, depth and insurance make sense for the Tigers, and coach Ed Orgeron has said he’s looking to add a graduate transfer at quarterback.

Though LSU is optimistic that whomever prevails in the current competition — sophomore Myles Brennan, redshirt junior Justin McMillan or redshirt freshman Lowell Narcisse — has the talent to upgrade the passing game, the ongoing competition suggests that Burrow, a former 4-star recruit, would have a chance to ultimately prevail in a four-man competition.

Brennan was a highly touted recruit who won the job as the backup to Danny Etling last season. He’s still the perceived frontrunner to start this fall, but the fact that Orgeron hasn’t named him the starter means there’s more he wants to see from Brennan before handing him the starting position.

McMillan was a dark-horse in the early stages of this race, but teammates praised his play throughout spring practice and after the spring game Orgeron said McMillan was playing with more confidence than the other two.

Narcisse, like Brennan was highly touted coming out of high school, but he was redshirted last season and missed his entire senior season of high school in 2016 because of a knee injury.

The Tigers have been looking for a consistent playmaker at quarterback since Zach Mettenberger’s senior season in 2013, and there’s optimism that they’ll find it in 2018.

New offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger has implemented a multiple spread attack that is passing friendly, which will come in handy since LSU doesn’t have a proven running back. Although there’s a lot of inexperience among the wide receivers as well, that group features several talented prospects in addition to Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles, who had 69 catches, 1,158 yards and 13 touchdowns as a sophomore two years ago.

Whoever lines up to take the first snap against Miami on Sept. 2 will have an opportunity to be the most productive LSU passer since Mettenberger.

Like the Tigers, Ohio State was non-committal on a starting quarterback at the end of spring, though Burrow’s decision to transfer suggests the Buckeyes were leaning toward choosing Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Burrow backed up J.T. Barrett in 2016 and was engaged in a close competition with Haskins to back up Barrett last season before suffering a broken bone in his throwing hand shortly before the season opener.

Other reportedly potential destinations are Nebraska, Florida, Boston College, North Carolina, Texas and Pittsburgh. In his tweet, Burrow, who graduated last Sunday, added that he expected to choose a destination “in the coming weeks.”
