For as great as LSU junior running back Leonard Fournette was in 2015, he wasn’t able to carry the Tigers to the SEC title game when matched up against the elite teams on the schedule. While Fournette may be the best player in the nation this season, one ESPN analyst worries the same thing could happen yet again if head coach Les Miles fails to adjust his gameplan against the SEC’s elite.

While Fournette racked up 1,953 rushing yards last season, he managed only 230 combined yards in LSU’s three losses to Alabama, Ole Miss and Arkansas. With those three opponents once again falling at the tail end of the Tigers’ slate this season, ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill noted LSU could fail to accomplish its lofty goals if they don’t come prepare to adjust in those games.

“My biggest concern is Les Miles,” Luginbill said on ESPN The Zone 105.9 with Bo Bounds, “because he refuses to makes adjustments and allow his quarterback to be the player he is capable of being, which in turn have a negative effect on the running back position. If you’re not willing to make adjustments, you’re not willing to tweak, you’re not willing to open things up and take the attention off your workhorse you are going to become one-dimensional once again you’re going to be athletically better than everybody you play outside of two or three teams so you’ll beat all those teams and you’ll struggle against teams that can match up with you athletically.

“LSU has enough talent top to bottom in all three phases to win the national championship the question is going to be whether Les Miles can make those adjustments, allow the offense to run as it should be with balance or be stubborn (and continue to run into a heavy box time and again).”

It’s interesting to note while many are quick to throw starting quarterback Brandon Harris under the bus for LSU’s offensive woes, Luginbill appears to have faith in the former high-profile recruit. Make no mistake after last season’s collapse down the stretch, Miles will once again find himself on the chopping block if the same issues repeat themselves for LSU this season.
