The Cincinnati Bengals took reigning Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Now, they’ve handed the rookie out of LSU the keys to the franchise, as he’s the presumed Week 1 starter for coach Zac Taylor’s squad.

On Tuesday’s episode of “NFL Training Camp Live,” Taylor said he’s been impressed with the work Burrow has done so far (via 247Sports):

“We’ve been very pleased with how he’s operating this training camp,” Taylor said. “He’s on the path that we envisioned for him. He’s got a full grasp of our offense. Those are the things that we expected of him. It is still training camp. We haven’t played against another team. He faces a similar defense every single day. As you go through training camp and try to not allow yourself to go there mentally, there’s still a lot of work to do. I’m pleased with the progress he’s made the first couple of weeks.”

It’s refreshing to hear Taylor acknowledge that it’s just training camp, as this is a time of year when optimism over how rookies look can get blown out of proportion.

But, clearly, Burrow is checking all the boxes Taylor and his staff have for him, and that is certainly a good sign.
