Joe Burrow is coming home.

Not that there was much suspense, but the Cincinnati Bengals made it official Thursday, selecting the former Mr. Football in Ohio with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burrow started his college career at Ohio State before transferring to LSU, where he won the Heisman Trophy, broke the FBS record with 60 TD passes in a season and led the Tigers to the 2019 national championship.

Burrow became the 10th SEC quarterback taken No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft and the 1st since Cam Newton in 2011. He’s also the 1st college player since Newton to win a national title, the Heisman Trophy and go No. 1 in the draft in the same year.

Burrow also became the 1st SEC QB taken in the 1st round since Johnny Manziel in 2014. With Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa expected to drafted later in the 1st round, the stage is set for the SEC to have 2 QBs go in the 1st round of the same draft for the first time since 1952.

Burrow grew up in Athens, Ohio, and had been linked to the nearby Bengals since midway through the 2019 season. They reportedly told him he was their guy before the draft.

Cincinnati hasn’t reached the NFL playoffs since 2015, and the Bengals haven’t won a playoff game since the 1990 season.
