LSU coach Ed Orgeron has become a face of college football for a variety of reasons. He’s coming off a national championship-winning season, his gravelly voice makes him more unique, and recently, he made comments about most of his players having COVID-19.

The long-time CBS news magazine “60 Minutes” has latched on to that story, and will profile Orgeron this week as the Tigers, and the rest of the SEC, get set to open the season on Sept. 26 against Mississippi State.

“I think football is good for everybody,” Orgeron said in a preview clip CBS shared. “I’ve seen them practice, not get sick, I’ve seen them get sick last couple of days and come back. You know, they have their 10-day quarantine. But I ask them, ‘How sick were you?,’ they said, ‘Coach, I had a little cough.'” So I think the young players, when they do get sick, get over it quick.”

Earlier this week, Orgeron told reporters, “Look, two weeks ago, we had everybody on our offensive line except two or three guys were out. We couldn’t do any team (drills), we adjusted very well. And we’ve got to make adjustments, but I think most of, not all our players, but most of our players have caught it. Hopefully, they don’t catch it again and are out for games.”

Reporter Jon Wertheim then asked Orgeron if he’s come to grips that there might not be football, and Orgeron said he doesn’t let it enter his mind, though he admits it could happen.

“I know at LSU, we’ve prepared these guys to play, we didn’t blink,” he said. “We’re ready.”
