Last year, Georgia LB Roquan Smith became the No. 8 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, going to the Chicago Bears.

Smith was the first linebacker off the board, and that’s something LSU LB Devin White hopes to emulate in the 2019 NFL Draft.

However, speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Saturday, White said he actually wants to do a little better than Smith did last year (via NFL.com):

“I don’t really want to follow in his footsteps being a top-10 pick. I want to exceed his footsteps and be a top-five pick,” White said. “I want to go before him. He went No. 8 and that’s big bro, all respect to him. He really made this possible for me.

“Me and Roquan, we have the same agent, we talk all the time, and it’s just the expectation. He did it and now I got to go do it a little more than what he did it. That’s all I really got, and what he brings to the game is unique. What I bring to the game is unique. I’m just ready to take my talents to another team and focus on the future.”

White led the SEC with 123 tackles in 2018, and he’s one of the highest-rated linebacker prospects in the country.

If he has a strong performance in Indy, he may end up doing better than Smith, just like he wants.
