LSU held its second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility, and the Tigers offense received a glowing review.

“I thought our offense had a tremendous day,” Ed Orgeron told reporters after practice, according to a school release. “It was an outstanding job. I thought Darrel Williams had a tremendous day and offensive line blocked well. Matt Canada and the offensive staff is doing a tremendous job. This the second scrimmage in a row that they have won.”

Due to poor weather, the team moved the scrimmage to the indoor practice facility, but the offense didn’t miss a beat. LSU’s quarterbacks combined to complete 11 of their 19 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns, according to the school release, including four completions on 10 attempts for 133 yards and touchdown from projected starter Danny Etling.

Williams, a senior running back, carried the ball 20 times for 93 yards and three touchdowns, while junior Nick Brossette added 72 yards on 14 attempts.

Injuries have sapped some of the Tigers’ depth on defense, which may have played a part in the offenses’ success. Orgeron praised sophomore defensive end Rashard Lawrence and freshman linebacker Ray Thornton for their performance in the scrimmage, but he wasn’t as complementary of the secondary.

“We have some work to do on defense,” Orgeron said. “Obviously, we have some injuries up front on defense. Some guys are not practicing, but we need to get better. The offense completed some deep balls on us today, and there are some things we need to fix.”

With a new offensive coordinator in Canada, it is a good sign for the Tigers that the offense has put together back-to-back performances. Dave Aranda, who had great success in his first year as LSU’s defensive coordinator has his work cut out for him, however. Several key defensive players are gone from last year, and injuries aren’t helping matters.

Overall, the message was largely positive after the Tigers’ scrimmage.

“We had an excellent day today,” Orgeron said. “We challenged our guys on mindset, physical toughness and energy. If you want to put it all together, we wanted to have a game-type atmosphere out there and we did it. I’m very proud of our football team and our coaching staff. We were very well-prepared and there was a lot of energy and great execution.”

LSU will hold another spring scrimmage next Saturday, and its annual National L Club Spring Game will take place on April 22.
