LSU has a starting quarterback. It’s just not public knowledge yet.

While meeting with the media on Monday, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said that he has met with the quarterbacks to let them know who will be the starter entering the season. However, Orgeron was not ready to announce that decision until after he meets with the entire team to let them know.

It will either be junior Joe Burrow or sophomore Myles Brennan.

“It was a very close decision,” Orgeron said. “[Offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger] saw it back and forth all last week. The grades were very close. Either quarterback could have won out. The winner came out on the sheet of paper with the grades. That was the deciding factor. Either quarterback would be fine with me. It was that close. It wasn’t lopsided.”

What factors went into the grades that led to Orgeron’s decision?

“Leadership, maturity, how to handle pressure, work ethic, individual study time, everything counts,” Orgeron said.  “How you handle adversity on the field, how you make decisions when everything is not perfect.”

Burrow transferred from Ohio State earlier this year after getting limited game action with the Buckeyes the past two seasons. He has 287 career passing yards with two touchdowns.

Brennan played in six games for the Tigers last season, throwing for 182 yards and a touchdown.

LSU opens the season against Miami at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
