For the first time since 1994, LSU has opened the season with a 1-2 record.

While that’s obviously cause for concern, especially when noting the Tigers have surrendered 91 points to Mississippi State and Missouri — those teams have yet to win a game outside of the games they played LSU — to open the 2020 season.

It’s not all bad in Baton Rouge, as Ed Orgeron discussed on Monday, the Tigers continue to win the turnover battle and are just a few plays away from turning things around.

“We’re +6 in the turnover ratio. Man, +6 in the turnover ratio and scored 41 points. We need to win the game,” Orgeron said during his Monday press conference. “Okay, so there’s a lot of good things. Our guys are causing turnovers, our guys are going after the football – just like I saw all camp.

“Our guys are rushing the passer, putting pressure on the passer. So those are some good things, those are the things that we have to build upon. I really think that we beating ourselves. I think when you look at the film, it’s not the other team that beat us, we beat ourselves.”

Okay, so how will the Tigers go about doing that?

It all starts on defense where Orgeron says the gameplan may have to be simpified.

“First of all, we have to simplify and put our players in the best position that we can be. And I think when you do that, our players will make plays,” the LSU coach said. “So I think it’s somewhere in between, it’s not as difficult as it may look, but it’s not easy. I think it’s somewhere in the middle. It starts with us, it starts with coaching.”

In addition to simplifying the scheme, changes on the depth chart are likely to be made in Baton Rouge.

“We’re gonna make some personnel changes, maybe get some bigger defensive linemen in there that we can play the run better,” Orgeron concluded. “Obviously, I think our pass rush is pretty good right now, but we got to be able to stop the run better. I think it’s all about playing bigger guys up front plane better technique.”

Those changes will have to made in a hurry as LSU travels to Florida this weekend to face a Gator team averaging over 40 points per game this season.
