LSU is just 3-2 on the season and one of the reasons for the Tigers’ struggles has been their inability to run the ball.

Ed Orgeron’s team is averaging just 70.6 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 128th nationally out of 130 FBS programs.

During the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, Orgeron was asked if hiring a new offensive line coach, Brad Davis, in June has payed a role in the lack of productivity.

“I’m never going to use that as an excuse,” Orgeron said. “Brad’s a good coach. We need to be more committed to the run. … Having a new coach in the middle of the summer can affect a few things, but not to the extent that we can’t run the football. … I think it’s a combination of commitment to the run; the style of run we’re doing isn’t working. We have to change some things.”

Given what LSU has remaining on its schedule, finding more rushing offense might not be the easiest task.

The Tigers play at No. 16 Kentucky this weekend, and the Wildcats have one of the best defenses in the SEC. Additionally, games with nationally ranked Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and Ole Miss also remain on the schedule.

“That’s the SEC,” Orgeron said. “That’s why you come here to the SEC. It’s been like that almost every year. The national championship year, we beat like 6 of the top 10 teams or something like that. … But we’ve got to look at it one game at a time, and first up is Kentucky.”
