LSU head coach Ed Orgeron spoke following the team’s organized scrimmage on Saturday, updating the media on the progress of his team.

Of note, he discussed quarterback Danny Etling’s starting job and the potential return of LSU’s single-season sack leader, Arden Key.

On Elting, he said that the former Purdue transfer hasn’t lost his job yet, but he hasn’t exactly taken the job and run with it either. In Orgeron’s words, no signal caller has “taken the bull by the horns” in the QB race.

Orgeron and Matt Canada had to be hoping that Etling would take the starting job and have a big spring, especially after Brandon Harris’ decision to transfer. That doesn’t look like the case at this point.

Etling wasn’t exactly impressive on Saturday, finishing 5-for-13 for 97 yards during the scrimmage. Justin McMillan finished 5-for-7 with 62 yards passing, while Lindsey Scott finished 3-for-7 with 40 yards passing and Lowell Narcisse finished 1-for-2 with 5 yards passing. One of the biggest storylines for the Tigers this offseason is the voluntary absence of dynamic pass rusher Arden Key. Key, a pass rushing specialist, left the team for personal reasons prior to spring practice.

Orgeron said that Key was “making progress” and that he was still on track to return this summer.

Key has first-round pick written all over him, and he’s a massive key to Dave Aranda’s defense. Few can apply the kind of pressure Key can in the backfield.

Orgeron also noted that DL Christian LaCouture, who was recently given the honorary No. 18, has not been scrimmaging due to scar tissue in his knee. At this point, it’s important to get LaCouture ready for the season.
