Duke freshman phenom Zion Williamson is the talk of college basketball.

Williamson’s high-flying dunks and remarkable athleticism for his 6-foot-7, 285-pound frame have made football pundits drool over the thought of getting him on the gridiron. Evidently, assistant coaches have, too.

Former LSU assistant Eric Mateos revealed he offered Williamson a scholarship after watching his dunks in high school, per ESPN.

When Mateos was the TEs coach at LSU in 2016, he called Williamson to personally offer him a scholarship at LSU.

“I thought, hell, why not, he’s probably the best damn tight end to ever live,” Mateos told ESPN.

“Honestly, I just thought it would be really fun and would be good exposure for LSU if we offered him for football. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to be too [interested],” Mateos said. “Coach O said go recruit the best athletes in the country, and that’s what I tried to do.”

Mateos then compared Williamson to former South Carolina freak Jadeveon Clowney.

“If he’s 285, you’re talking a rare specimen, Julius Peppers-type of freak,” Mateos said. “I used to think [Jadeveon] Clowney was the biggest freak I’d ever seen. Zion probably brings the same or better athleticism based off what I’ve seen.”

Williamson is the talk of college basketball right now, and this dunk Wednesday night has everyone buzzing.
