When Ed Orgeron took over the LSU football program on an interim basis, he named Steve Ensminger his offensive coordinator. Following the failed Matt Canada experiment at LSU, Coach O turned back to the man he originally put in charge of the unit.

Of course, it wasn’t Orgeron who brought Ensminger to Baton Rouge, it was former LSU coach Les Miles. The same man who brought Orgeron into the program. Naturally, Miles was a good person to interview following the promotion of Ensminger back to the offensive coordinator role at LSU.

During a Tuesday interview on ESPN Baton Rouge 104.5 FM program After Further Review, hosted by Matt Moscona, Miles shared his thoughts on the decision.

“I think Steve (Ensminger) is very talented. I don’t think there’s any problem with that. I think that’s a good decision,” Miles said on the program. “It appears from here that’s the only decision there was, and thank goodness that Steve Ensminger was there. A guy that has experience in the conference to call plays.”

While Miles liked the decision, he went on to state the importance of doing your due diligence and interviewing multiple candidates, something it doesn’t appear Orgeron did following Canada’s early exit from the program. Miles stated his interviewing process helped him to initially discover Dave Aranda before he hired Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator.

The interview with Aranda eventually led Miles to hire LSU’s current defensive coordinator when Steele left the Baton Rouge for Auburn.

“But what you need to do is you need to get out and interview. Every time you have an opening, you need to get to know people. That’s how Dave Aranda ends up at LSU,” Miles said.

While many have come out and questioned Orgeron’s decision to hire Ensminger, one coach that would know better than most appears to like the decision. How Coach O went about making the decision, however, could have likely been handled better it would seem.
