When it comes to programs with a lot of history like LSU, some think it’s just best not to mess with a good thing. It’s a dangerous game to change up uniforms when they already have a lot of tradition mixed in.

LSU and its fans will probably grant an exception for some new helmets though. The Tigers unveiled a throwback look just before their game against Ole Miss on Saturday night. Instead of its usual Tiger and “LSU” squarely in the center, LSU decided to simplify with just the number on the side in a tribute to its 1958 team.

The change comes in step with the team’s 60th anniversary after they won the national championship that year. Billy Cannon, who was on the team and now has a statue of him outside Tiger Stadium following his passing earlier this year, also won the Heisman in 1959.

Cannon’s legacy is one reason the Tiger’s made the helmet change on Saturday. His memorable 89-yard Halloween run came against Ole Miss.
