Derrius Guice’s sophomore season at LSU featured a bigger workload than most expected, and it helped him get noticed by SEC coaches and media members, as both named him a first-team All-SEC running back. Next year, however, he has sights set on a bigger individual honor.

On the three most prominent All-American teams released so far (Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America and Sporting News), Texas’ D’Onta Foreman and Florida State’s Dalvin Cook are the two consensus first-team running backs. Foreman carried the ball 323 times for 2,028 yards and 15 touchdowns in 11 games, averaging 184.4 yards per game. Cook logged 268 carries in 12 games for 1,620 yards and 18 touchdowns, an average of 135 yards per game.

Guice averaged roughly 8 yards per carry, better than Foreman (6.3) and Cook (6), but did not receive the same kind of workload, only carrying the ball 157 times for 1,249 yards and 14 touchdowns.

With Leonard Fournette having declared for the NFL Draft, Guice may be in line for an All-American season in 2017.
