Garrett Nussmeier did not play in LSU’s final 2 regular-season games to limit his 2021 participation to 4 games so he can take a redshirt. Since then, however, Max Johnson has entered the transfer portal and LSU is faced with either playing a walk-on or asking Nussmeier to play a fifth game for the upcoming Texas Bowl. It turns out Nussmeier may be able to play the bowl game and still redshirt.

WAFB 9 reports that LSU is waiting on a decision from the NCAA to allow Nussmeier to play the bowl game and still be considered a redshirt freshman in 2022.

“We’ve put together a plan that we feel really great about, we have a multitude of quarterbacks taking reps during practice. Garrett Nussmeier being one of them,” interim head coach Brad Davis told reporters, per WAFB. “We are working through some things right now to have him play for us and still maintain his redshirt, so that’s something obviously that’s in the process and if they were denied for whatever reason we have some contingencies in place to move the football and secure an offense.”

This season, Nussmeier is 29-of-57 passing for 329 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Nussmeier. Out of Flower Mound, Texas, Nussmeier was rated 4-stars and the No. 84 prospect overall nationally in the class of 2021 on the 247Sports Composite.
