Odell Beckham Jr. is easily one of the most exciting players to watch on NFL Sundays, but the New York Giants wide receiver has begun to develop a bit of a diva reputation.

The former LSU star did not report to voluntary workouts with the Giants earlier this spring and instead was spotted in California working out with NFL Hall-of-Famer Cris Carter and bowling with girlfriend Iggy Azalea. Beckham’s absence drew grumblings that he was still the same immature person who traveled to Miami for a mini-vacation just a week before a playoff game.

After the Miami incident, New York GM Jerry Reese told Beckham that he needed to be more responsible and consider his actions more carefully. Speaking with radio host Mike Francesa on Thursday afternoon, Giants owner John Mara echoed Reese’s words but also came to his receiver’s defense.

“I wish we had another dozen players like him,” Mara told Francesa, according to nj.com.

“He knows that he’s got to mature and learn to control his emotions better. He’s working on that. But one thing about that kid is that when he shows up at work, nobody works harder than he does. He’s so competitive, even in practice. He wants to win so badly.”

Beckham’s ability on the field is beyond reproach. He was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014, has been to the Pro Bowl each year he’s been in the league and has caught 288 passes for 4,122 yards and 35 touchdowns in just three seasons.

The former Tiger has a penchant for making incredible plays look effortless, and he is the biggest star on either of New York’s football teams. It appears the one thing Beckham must focus on now is self-control.

“He’s obviously had some issues trying to control his emotions,” Mara said. “He’s working on that and I think he’s going to be just fine going forward. We’re going to have some ups and downs for sure, but in the long run, I’m glad he’s wearing blue.”
