What Alabama hangover?

LSU looked more than motivated the week after a draining loss to Alabama, jumping on Arkansas early and riding Derrius Guice and Leonard Fournette to a 38-10 whipping of Arkansas on Saturday night.

The Tigers rushed for 390 yards led by 252 yards from Guice, and the defense held Austin Allen to 210 yards passing to improve to 6-3, 4-2 in the SEC while Arkansas dropped to 6-4, 2-4 in the league.

What it means: It means the Ed Orgeron audition continues at LSU as he passed this round with flying colors. Playing well against Arkansas the week after the Alabama defeat was something the Tigers had not done the last two years under Les Miles, getting outscored 48-14 in two losses to Arkansas the last two seasons.

This made LSU 4-1 under Orgeron with the one loss coming in last week’s 10-0 loss to No. 1 Alabama.

For Arkansas? It means the continuation of an up-and-down season. The Hogs were blown out by Auburn a couple of weeks ago, rebounded with a win over Florida, then laid another egg at home against the Tigers.

What I liked: For LSU, the Tigers finally got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before the Razorbacks started showing some life.

You also had to like the rebound of Danny Etling, who responded from a nightmarish game against Alabama with a solid outing (10-for-16 passing, 157 yards) against the Hogs to complement a dominant running game.

And, of course, you had to like the dominant performance by both the rushing game and the defense.

For Arkansas? It was the fight back. Down 21-0, Austin Allen hit Dominique Reed for a 44-yard touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-22 in the second quarter, then the Hogs took advantage of a Fournette fumble to get a field goal to cut it to 21-10 in the third quarter.

Alas, the Tigers answered that little run with their own touchdown drive and created distance.

What I didn’t like:: For LSU, there wasn’t much not to like outside of a sluggish stretch after jumping to a 21-0 lead and a couple of lost fumbles by usually reliable players Fournette and punt returner Tre’Davious White.

For Arkansas? A team that prides itself in its physicality was completely dominated physically by LSU’s line on both sides of the ball.

Who’s the man: You have to give a nod to Fournette, who rushed for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns on 17 carries to bounce back from his anemic 17-carry, 35-yard outing against Alabama.

But he was simply the warm-up act for Guice. His 252-yard rushing game included a school-record 96-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Key play: After Arkansas scored 10 unanswered points to pull within 21-10 in the third quarter, LSU faced a 3rd-and-2 at its own 27-yard line and Etling faked a handoff to fullback J.D. Moore to the left, and pitched it to Guice to the right. Guice rumbled for 38 yards and a first down.

Four plays later, Fournette scored his third touchdown from 3 yards out to make it 28-10, sending the game back to a rout.

What’s next: LSU hosts Florida in a huge game for bowl placement for the Tigers. Arkansas tries to bounce back on the road at Mississippi State.
