First-year LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini is in the crosshairs following the Tigers’ disappointing loss to Missouri on Saturday.

Mizzou piled up 586 total yards, including 406 passing yards in the 45-41 loss in a game that was moved from Baton Rouge to Columbia, Missouri because of Hurricane Delta. It was a remarkable effort considering Missouri QB Connor Bazelak threw for 406 yards and four touchdowns despite missing three of his top receiving targets because of COVID-19 protocols.

Fans were also frustrated with the LSU defense following the season-opening loss to Mississippi State. The LSU defense entered Week 3 ranked No. 12 in the SEC in total defense, and last in passing defense at 368 yards per game.

Coach Ed Orgeron said he supported Pelini and he suggested some things need to change schematically.

“I love Bo,” Orgeron said. “I think Bo’s going to be a great defensive coordinator. He’s done it before. But we have to get better.”

Pelini was hired in the offseason to replace Dave Aranda, who took the head coaching job at Baylor.

The challenge only ramps up next week when LSU is charged with slowing down Florida’s high-powered passing attack.
