LSU won’t have quarterback Myles Brennan available against No. 2 Alabama.

It might not have backup Max Johnson.

In fact it might not even play Alabama at all.

Head coach Ed Orgeron announced Monday that Brennan won’t play because of an injury suffered against Missouri on Oct. 10. Brennan hasn’t played since and might not play again this season.

“The doctors are talking right now to see what’s the best for Myles,” Orgeron said. “We’re going to do what’s the best for him, whether it’s getting it fixed, getting it operated now or wait. I think we’re still discussing that.”

But the Tigers also have several players unavailable because of COVID protocols, reportedly including Johnson.

If the absences linger, it’s possible the game, scheduled for Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, will be postponed. Rescheduling it would be tricky but not impossible.

Orgeron wouldn’t go into detail about what he called “a very fluid situation.”

“I can tell you that we do have players that have COVID, and we do have some players that are quarantined,” Orgeron said. “There’s starters among them.

“We’re worried about the guys that are sick and their safety. There’s no question. But the numbers are high with the quarantine. And that’s where you get into some low numbers. You put the COVID plus the quarantine.”

LSU has discussed the status of the game with the SEC, which announced Monday that this week’s game between Mississippi State and Auburn had been postponed because of COVID issues with State.

Stay tuned.

If the Alabama-LSU game is played as scheduled and Johnson is unavailable, that would leave freshman TJ Finley as the only scholarship quarterback available.

Orgeron wouldn’t identify any individuals affected by COVID, but he did say the Tigers are “very thin” at quarterback.

“We may have to put someone else at quarterback just in case,” said. “We have a plan in place. … When they tell me we’re at a certain number or something like that, we can play or we can’t play, I think that’s up to the league and (LSU athletic director Scott Woodward). I think by Wednesday, that should be solidified. But for right now we’re playing Alabama and we’re ready to go.”

Senior punter Zach Von Rosenberg, a 30-year-old former minor-league pitcher, took a few snaps at quarterback on the scout team last week and could be an emergency backup.

That would be so 2020.

Orgeron chuckled when asked about the prospect on Von Rosenberg being in the mix at quarterback on Saturday.

“Zach is our punter,” Orgeron said, “but he filled in, did some scout team quarterback for us. But, if I tell you who we’re going to move there and stuff like that, it would give away a game plan. I can’t do it.”

If Von Rosenberg were to get into the game at quarterback for whatever reason, it wouldn’t be his first opportunity to throw a pass in a game.

That happened 2 years ago at Auburn. Von Rosenberg lined up ostensibly to do his regular job (punting), but after taking the snap he started to run toward the line of scrimmage before trying a jump pass.

It did not work.

But Von Rosenberg seems game for another opportunity.

After practice last Thursday he tweeted, “After completing a pass today on @JrStingley (star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.) I would like to announce my retirement from LSU football.”

On Monday, Von Rosenberg suggested in a tweet that the awkward jump pass didn’t give him a fair chance to demonstrate his passing ability: “Lemme set my feet to throw … you’ll see.”

Reportedly LSU also is without any tight ends or long snappers.

The SEC has set a 53-man threshold before teams being able to play amid COVID absences.

LSU’s game at Florida, which was scheduled for Oct. 17, was postponed to Dec. 12 because of COVID issues in the Gators program.

That limits the possibilities for moving the game against Alabama.
