Chris Jans has announced a new title for one of his assistant coaches.

James Miller has been promoted to associate head coach on Mississippi State men’s basketball coaching staff announced, Jans announced Thursday.

Miller is set to begin his second season at Mississippi State and his 6th season overall on Jans’ staff in 2023-24. Jans also hinted that Miller will be a head coach soon.

Miller has 18 years of coaching experience and has made 6 postseason appearances during his 8 seasons at the NCAA Division I level, including previous stops at Arkansas State, New Mexico State, North Texas and Omaha.

“James Miller has been our associate head coach with or without the ‘title’,” Jans said. “Coach Miller is a one-of-a-kind coach. He’s a rarity in that he has no holes in his skill set, he can do it all. He’s going to make an Athletic Director and University happy very soon. Until then, he will continue to make our program better daily. We’re fortunate that James and his family are Bulldogs.”

Miller first coached with Jans for 4 seasons at New Mexico State. Similarly, he was promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach following his first season in 2018-19.
