Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald is having an incredible 2017 season so far, and a lot of that is thanks to coach Dan Mullen, who has developed a reputation as a quarterback guru.

As the 3-0 Bulldogs prepare to travel to Georgia for a big SEC East-West crossover game on Saturday night, Fitzgerald spoke with ESPN’s Alex Scarborough for an enlightening profile on the relationship between the player and the coach.

Coming out of high school as a lightly-regarded 3-star prospect, Fitzgerald said Mullen has completely changed the way he plays quarterback. He shared a hilarious quote about how Mullen got him to buy into throwing check-down routes when deep throws don’t develop:

“The saying has always been ‘Chicks dig the long ball,'” Fitzgerald said. “[Mullen will] say that then he’ll look at you and say, ‘But look at the guys in the NFL who have beautiful wives, beautiful girlfriends, and they check the ball down 95 percent of the time.’ So obviously the really good-looking girls, they like the check downs.”

That advice has clearly worked for Fitzgerald, who has thrown for 543 yards and seven touchdowns (with only one interception) so far this season.

He’s also been dominant in the running game, adding 240 yards and five scores on the ground in only three games.

See if the Bulldogs can improve to 4-0 as they take on Georgia on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Eastern time. The game can be seen on ESPN.
