It hasn’t just been an exceptional day for Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello. It’s been an historic one.

With 14 minutes, 14 seconds to go in the fourth quarter at LSU, Costello threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Austin Williams, his fourth touchdown strike of the game. It also put Costello at 492 passing yards with nearly a whole quarter still to go.

As The Athletic shared on Twitter, it’s the most passing yards by an opposing quarterback in the history of LSU’s Tiger Stadium. The previous record was held by former Florida quarterback Rex Grossman, who passed for 464 yards against the Tigers there in 2001.

And Costello still had most of the fourth quarter to potentially extend his record. It’s been quite a showing for the redshirt senior quarterback in his first career start for the Bulldogs. Costello also passed for more yards against LSU than any opposing quarterback during the 2019 season, when the Tigers went 15-0 and won the national championship.

If this is a sign of things to come from Mississippi State’s offense under head coach Mike Leach, then it could be an exciting season for the Bulldogs.

Costello’s fourth touchdown pass had Mississippi State ahead, 34-24, early in the fourth quarter. However, LSU had cut the lead to 34-31 with 11:01 to go.
