Mike Leach doesn’t shy away from pointed questions, and one from Barstool Sports’ Brandon Walker centered on a 40-yard dash among SEC head football coaches.

Leach was confident that he’d finish in first place if all the coaches were lined up on a practice field.

“Why wouldn’t I,” Leach said. “It’s like Sasquatch says, ‘If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else is going to believe you.'”

Walker then told Leach that he should have tried Brian Kelly’s fake Southern accent when he commented about Kelly taking the proposed race seriously. Leach chuckled about Kelly’s accent. Leach said coming from Wyoming, he typically has a drawl in his accent, and he can’t tell if a Southern accent has already rubbed off on him.

“Some guys will definitely push it a little hard,” Leach said. “Whoever they’re talking to, they’ll try to copy how they talk, rather than how they really talk, and that’s a lot to keep track of. I try to do everything in my accent.”

As usual with most Leach interviews, he covered a range of topics, from the College Football Playoff, to pizza, cow bells, the transfer portal, name, image and likeness, Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC, and Mississippi food.
