Heading into the 2018 season, many prognosticators — admittedly myself included — have high hopes for Joe Moorhead’s debut season at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs return experienced and talented players all over the roster and look to have the necessary depth to potentially challenge for supremacy in the SEC West.

Despite the loaded nature of the roster on paper, there is one position that stands out as a possible weakness in Starkville — wide receiver. The unit left much to be desired in 2017, leaving the passing game lacking much explosiveness despite the team’s 9-4 record. MSU did not have a receiver notch 30 receptions last season and none of them recorded more than 276 receiving yards.

While some of that could be put on Nick Fitzgerald’s inability to consistently get his playmakers the ball downfield, Dan Mullen’s heavy run between the tackles scheme and failure to land elite receiver prospects, such as former Starkville High School standout AJ Brown, should shoulder just as much, if not more, of the blame.

Fortunately for Mississippi State fans, the program signed three four-star receivers in the 2018 recruiting cycle — early enrollee Devonta Jason, the state’s No. 1 high school prospect Malik Heath and early enrollee and the nation’s No. 1 junior college receiver Stephen Guidry. Those players could potentially contribute immediately in Starkville but there’s another name MSU fans should get to know heading into the summer according to Moorhead — redshirt freshman Austin Williams.

Per Bob Carskadon of HailState.com, Moorhead continues to sing the praises of his young receiver during Mississippi State’s Road Dawgs Tour. The tour is scheduled to make stops in Starkville, Tupelo, and Memphis on Monday.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Williams did not play for MSU last season, he was redshirting, but if he can prove to be a difference maker, along with the team’s new additions, the Bulldogs appear poised to have the weaponry capable of fully utilizing Moorhead’s heavy receiver sets immediately next season.
