Despite an illustrious career at Mississippi State that includes many records broken and awards won, one distinction that alludes Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott is being named SEC Player of the Year.

In his final year in Starkville, Prescott is having another spectacular season and is in the discussion as the conference’s top player for 2015. And with two of Mississippi State’s marquee games on its schedule coming in November, Prescott has a chance to lock up the award for himself if he can perform well.

Entering the final month of the season, Prescott was already one of the SEC’s top passers and rushers. Now, he’s started the month by going 27 of 40 passing for 303 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions against a stout Missouri defense. Overall, he has Mississippi State playing some of its best football of the season, averaging 40.8 points over the last four games, all resulting in wins.

When it comes to throwing the ball, Prescott’s 2,351 passing yards entering Week 10 ranks 2nd in the SEC and his 18-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio has only been outdone so far by LSU’s Brandon Harris, who has thrown 9 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Prescott leads all SEC quarterbacks with a completion percentage of 66.7 and his 200 completions are only behind Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly, who has 213 completions but has thrown the ball 27 more times than Prescott.

What Prescott is able to do with his arm is impressive, but his running ability is what makes him perhaps the most dynamic player in the SEC.

Prescott has 418 rushing yards this season, which is 2nd in the conference for quarterbacks behind Tennessee’s Joshua Dobbs. But Dobbs has 10 more rushing attempts with one fewer game played than Prescott. Both quarterbacks are in the conference’s top 20 in rushing so far this season and both have 7 touchdowns, which is tied for 7th-best in the SEC.

If Prescott can keep up this kind of production this month against four tough SEC opponents, he will have proven himself more than worthy to be called the conference’s player of the year, and he’s gotten off to a good start against one of the best to begin the month.

Following its 31-13 win over Missouri, Mississippi State next plays Alabama, which ranks 4th in the FBS in total defense. This provides Prescott with an opportunity to show what he is capable of against some of college football’s best defenses and will likely weigh heavily on voters’ minds when it comes time to decide awards.

The Bulldogs’ season finishes up with a matchup between Mississippi State and in-state rival Ole Miss. The Rebels defense hasn’t been what it was last year, but it’s still stingy and seems to be hitting its stride recently.

That will be a game that will have a lot of eyes on it and will most likely have big SEC West implications. It could also be the game where Prescott solidifies his claim for SEC Player of the Year.
