The Oakland Raiders selected former Mississippi State S Johnathan Abram with one of their three first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He’s quickly making a name for himself, with his borderline-insane effort in practices and his solid play in preseason games.

The Raider coaching staff loves the intelligence he brings to the game. Per Josh Dubow of the Associated Press, Abram looks like a veteran safety:

“I just think he’s wise beyond his years,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. “He doesn’t act like a rookie. When he’s out there, he sounds like a seven or eight-year vet. I think the players take notice of that. Just how he prepares, how he studies, how he communicates with the guys on and off the field. The thing is not too big for him. The players see that. He doesn’t act like your typical rookie.”

Abram will likely be a starter in the Oakland secondary this fall, so we’ll see what sort of impact he has during his rookie campaign.
