Opt outs have become one of the main stories for Mississippi State in 2020, and the Bulldogs have another name to add to the growing list.

Defensive back Marcus Murphy tweeted that the decision to opt out is best for his personal situation.

“After careful consideration of what is best for me and my family moving forward, I have decided to opt out of the 2020 football season. I appreciate the love and support I’ve received during my time at Mississippi State University……… #7.”

Murphy has been a leader on the Mississippi State defense for a while, as he entered 2020 with experience in 17 games as a freshman and sophomore. Last week against Vanderbilt, he made a key tackle at the goal line, and overall for the season, Murphy has 34 tackles this season, but 10 came against Vanderbilt, a 24-17 win. He has a pass breakup and tackle for loss on the season as well.

He does not have an interception this season, but in 2019, Murphy led the team with two interceptions, and accounted for one of three defensive touchdown, and made 26 tackles, including one tackle for loss.

Murphy is listed at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, and he’s from West Point, Mississippi. He was a 3-star athlete coming out of high school according 247Sports. He was also ranked the No. 5 overall recruit in Mississippi by 247Sports.

Robbie Faulk of 247Sports estimates that MSU is down to 65 available scholarship players accounting for injuries, transfers and opt-outs. The SEC threshold to play a game is 53 players.
