Mississippi State has a full-fledged quarterback competition thanks to the stellar play on Saturday by Southern Miss transfer Jack Abraham.

After the Maroon and White spring game, coach Mike Leach said, “I don’t think we had particularly enough energy,” about the team overall, and that, “I think the quarterback position is wide open.”

Abraham finished 23-34 for 162 yds and two TDs in his MSU debut at the spring game. Meanwhile, incumbent starter Will Rogers finished 25 of 41 for 255 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. What’s more, Abraham’s team didn’t turn the ball over, while Rogers’ squad did twice, and Abraham’s team won the scrimmage. Remember, the Bulldogs also expect 4-star recruit Sawyer Robertson to join the program this summer.

Abraham offers a new wrinkle to an offense that was used to Rogers after he took over in October for K.J. Costello struggled in four-straight losses. Rogers completed 69 percent of his passes for 1,976 yards with 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

The quarterbacks did it against a stingy defense that only allowed 28 rushing yards by White on Maroon and 46 yards by Maroon on White.

Also on offense, Jaden Walley went down with an injury, and the wide receiver was helped off the field.

“Don’t give updates on injuries under any circumstances so he’s 100 percent healthy and we’re thrilled about that,” Leach said.
