Is there anything Marcus Murphy can’t do?

The senior running back has impacted the game in several different areas during his time at Missouri and it’s at the SEC Championship where his impact could be felt the most.

Throughout his career, Murphy’s best asset has been his ability break off big plays, especially in the return game. The 2012 season was Murphy’s breakout year with four return touchdowns and the elusive playmaker hasn’t looked back.

As a senior, Murphy continues to excel in the special teams arean with three more return touchdowns. His brightest moment of the season came against Florida when his three total touchdowns led Missouri to a 42-13 blowout win in the Swamp.

Despite the move to primarily be a running back is a versatile offensive weapon that can be utilized in the backfield, on the outside or even in the slots on a jet sweep.

His presence will be even more important this weekend in the SEC Championship because of the questionable status of Missouri’s leading rusher Russell Hansbrough. The junior suffered a sprained ankle in Missouri’s last game and is expected to play, but there’s no doubt he’ll be less than 100 percent against the Crimson Tide.

Missouri has shown it’s willing to use Murphy in a number of ways, too. Besides his obvious impact in the special teams areas, the senior running back can line up in the backfield, on the outside or even in the slot.

Look for the Tigers to utilize him possibly in some jet sweeps or other plays that could catch Alabama’s defense off guard and allow Murphy’s speed to break open some big runs.

As with any underdog looking to pull of an upset, Missouri will need those big plays and Murphy is more than capable of providing them for the Tigers on Saturday.

They’ll just need to get their X-factor the football.
