With the College World Series in Omaha and Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City officially canceled, along with all spring sports championships, some Missouri fans are wondering about the status of the Tigers’ teams postseason bans. The question came up at a press conference held by MU athletic director Jim Sterk and other administrators.

Per a transcript posted by Mitchell Forde of Power Mizzou, Sterk was asked, “Any more clarity on whether or not the baseball or softball teams will still have their postseason bans next year?”

“No,” Sterk responded. “We’ve asked the question, and I think it’ll be answered at an appropriate time. Right now there’s sequencing and immediate things that need to be decided, but I think it is appropriate that, as we look in the penalty, it’s for the 2020 season. So that’s what we think should happen, and I would say that’s appropriate.”

While some people (such as, say, Kansas fans) might see it as unfair that Mizzou gets to serve a postseason ban in a season in which the postseason was scrapped, it also seems unfair for the NCAA to extend the ban another year into 2021. Then again, the ban was widely considered unfair to begin with, and you never know with the NCAA.

The NCAA may accept that the SEC is still considering holding conference tournaments if the SEC spring sports seasons resume after April 15. Perhaps missing the conference tournaments would satisfy the postseason ban.
