It didn’t take long for Missouri athletic director Mack Rhoades to start getting questions on resuming the Tigers’ long-standing rivalry with Kansas. If Rhoades has his way, the Border War will be eventually be back on.

“Hopefully, in the future, we can find a way to come together and play, because I think it’s good for certainly his fans, our fans, and most importantly, our coaches and our student-athletes,” Rhoades said in an interview with Fox Sports. “The hope was we can have some positive discussion in the future.”

Missouri and Kansas have a rivalry that dates back more than 120 years on the football field. However, that rivalry been dormant in all sports since Mizzou left the Big 12 to join the SEC in 2011.

According to the report, Rhoades and Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger have already broached the subject since Rhoades was hired to replace former Mizzou AD Mike Alden in March.

In the interview, Rhoades indicated that at least some of the resistance is coming from the Kansas side of things, possibly from KU basketball coach Bill Self.

“I can’t speak to that — I don’t know what Coach Self thinks or feels,” Rhoades said in the interview. “But I think in a perfect world, I’d love to get everybody on board where we’re playing each other in all the different sports.”

Rhoades is trying to keep his eyes on the prize though, and knows who all of the bureaucratic posturing hurts the most.

“I just think the biggest losers in all of it are the fans and the student-athletes and the coaches. And maybe, sometimes, we all — including myself — lose sight of that. And I think we need to remember that. And again, hopefully, we would find a way where we could resume playing each other here in the future.”
