During San Francisco 49ers training camp on Tuesday, former Mizzou LB Donavin Newsom suffered a scary injury and was taken to the hospital after colliding with a teammate.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Newsom had movement in his lower extremities as he was taken off the field, which was an encouraging sign.

Now, the 49ers have released an official update on Newsom’s injury, saying the undrafted rookie sustained a concussion, but had no spinal fractures:

Obviously, a concussion is no laughing matter, but considering it could have been a fractured spine, Tuesday’s injury could have been much worse for Newsom.

He is still at the hospital, and the team has yet to release a timeline for his return to the field.
