Ohio Sports Betting: It's the Bengals turn on MNF

We’re more than 24 hours into legalized Ohio sports betting and the Buckeye state is the holiday weekend on a huge note with the Cincinnati Bengals playing the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

In what could be the marquis matchup of NFL Week 17, the Bengals are currently a +2.5 point underdog at home. The public is currently backing the Bills, as 56% of the total handle is currently on Buffalo to cover -2.5, according to DraftKings.

The public is expecting a shootout, though, as 78% of the total handle is on the over of 50.5 points.

So do the trends give the Bengals any shot to cover? To win?

Bengals and Bills Betting Trends

What’s the public looking at right now for this high-powered matchup? The Bengals are the hot team, but the Bills are still the favorite to win the Super Bowl at +350.

  • The Bengals have covered the spread in their last 10 games against teams with a winning record.
  • The Bengals have won their last seven games in a row.
  • Eleven of the Bengals last 12 games in January have hit the under.

The Cleveland Browns gave Ohioans who backed them a reason to celebrate yesterday when they routed the Carson Wentz-led Washington Commanders 24-10. The Browns were actually underdogs in the matchup and covered the spread quite easily. Hopefully state bettors backed the under, as the two teams didn’t do enough to score more than 40.5 points to hit the over.

Ohio sports betting launched at 12:01 a.m. and 13 online sports betting operators are live. Eight retail sportsbooks are also taking bets throughout the state.

Reds cut ribbon for BetMGM Sportsbook at Great American Ball Park

The Cincinnati Reds invited a few Ohio legends out for the grand opening of the BetMGM Sportsbook at Great American Ball Park this morning.

The Reds and BetMGM officially cut the ribbon on the sportsbook this morning at 11 a.m., as one lucky season ticket holder was selected to place the first bet alongside Cincinnati sports legends George Foster and Tim Krumrie.

The sportsbook at the Great American Ball Park is now open for business and the first NFL Sunday during Ohio’s sports betting launch.

BetMGM has partnered with the Reds to provide its retail sports betting services. The Reds also partnered with Underdog Sports Wagering to provide its online sports betting services.

Underdog Sports Wagering has yet to launch its online sports betting services in Ohio.

Ohio Sports Betting: No Bengals today, but do Browns stand a chance?

It’s the first NFL Sunday for Ohio sports betting and state bettors only have the lowly 6-9 Cleveland Browns to check out today.

The Browns will take on the Carson Wentz led Washington Commanders at in Washington at 1 p.m. this afternoon.

The Bengals take on the Buffalo Bills in a massive tilt tomorrow during Monday Night Football.

But what should you be looking at for the Browns today? The Browns at +2.5 point dogs this afternoon, but the public is fairly split in their betting. According to DraftKings, 51% of the total handle is currently on the Commanders to cover against Cleveland, while 60% of the total handle is predicting a low scoring affair and the matchup to hit the under of 40 points.

Here are some other Browns and Commanders betting trends to check out:

  • The Browns’ last five games have hit the under.
  • The Browns have lost six of their last seven games played on the East coast.
  • The Commanders have covered their last three games against teams with a losing record.

Cleveland Cavaliers open Caesars Sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially opened their Caesars Sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse just hours after Ohio sports betting’s universal launch.

Caesars Sportsbook is the “official sports betting partner” and “official casino partner” of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 10,000-square-foot sportsbook is located on the street level inside the Northwest Atrium area of the team’s home venue.

The Caesars Sportsbook app is also live and accepting bets throughout the Buckeye State.

“Caesars Sportsbook is ready to offer a top-of-the-line sports betting experience to Ohioans,” said Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital, in a press release. “This launch builds on our legacy in Ohio of treating customers like royalty. We look forward to providing an added level of excitement to the sports entertainment experience, whether they use our mobile app or visit one of our new retail sportsbooks in Columbus or Cleveland.”

The Cavaliers are planning a grand opening ceremony for the sportsbook on Tuesday, Jan. 2, prior to the Cavs tilt with the Bulls.

Caesars Sportsbook is also open and accepting bets through sports betting kiosks and betting window at Eldorado Gaming at Scioto Downs.

Ohio State loses at exact moment Times Square ball drops

I’m so sorry, Ohio State fans, but this is just too crazy to not highlight.

We all know the Buckeyes lost one of the greatest semifinal college playoffs games of all time on New Year’s Eve, but did you see how close the final missed field goal was to the Times Square ball drop?

Check this out.

The kick goes wide left at almost the exact moment the ball dropped and 2023 became a reality.

Less than a minute later at 12:01 a.m. sports betting launched in full throughout Ohio, which made for this amazingly awkward moment at the Hard Rock Cincinnati sportsbook where Reds legend Pete Rose was scheduled to place the first legal bet.

Honestly though? It probably worked out better for Ohio sports betting fans. If the kick had taken place past 12:01 a.m., online sportsbooks would have been eligible to take in-game bets. How much money did Buckeye fans save by not being able to bet on the final kick?

Barstool Sportsbooks live at Hollywood Columbus, Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway Casinos

Both Barstool Sportsbooks at Hollywood Columbus Casino and Hollywood Dayton Raceway opened their doors this morning during the Ohio sports betting launch.

Each casino opened their doors to bettors at the 12:01 a.m. launch.

The Barstool Sportsbook app is also live in Ohio and currently taking bets as well.

The Barstool Sportsbooks were getting ready to take their first bets as the founder of Barstool Sports Dave Portnoy watched his Buckeyes shank a potential game winning field goal that would have sent Ohio State to the College Football Championship.

Betr records first ever real-money sports bet in Ohio

Betr, a sports betting operator touted as the first direct-to-consumer micro-betting sports betting platform in the world, recorded its first ever real-money bet at 12:01 a.m. during Ohio’s sports betting launch.

The $10 bet was placed by Marco Piemonte, @marco_parlay on twitter, known as “Million Dollar Marco” who specializes in large bets and large parlays.

Social media superstar and boxer Jake Paul serves as the company’s president in partnership with Betr founder and CEO Joey Levy.

Betr received a sports betting license in November and handles the online sports betting program for the NFL Hall of Fame Village.

Betr’s sports betting app focuses solely on micro-betting, a type of wagering that only deals with play-by-play events as opposed to outcome wagering.

First Ohio sports bet taken at betJACK sportsbook is on Cavs to win NBA finals

Both JACK Cleveland and JACK Thistledown betJACK sportsbooks are open and taking bets after Ohio sports betting officially launched at 12:01 a.m.

The first bet taken at a betJACK sportsbook? A $68 wager on the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA Championship.

A representative from the Ohio Special Olympics made the first bet at the JACK Cleveland sportsbook.

Until 2 a.m. the JACK Cleveland betJACK sportsbook will match every bet with a monetary donation of up to $20,000 to the Ohio Special Olympics.

Both casinos seemed to have large crowds who had waited until launch to be among the first Ohioans to make legal sports bets in the Buckeye State.

Hopefully they have better luck tonight than the Buckeyes.

Ohio Sports Betting: Pete Rose casts first sports bet at Hard Rock Cincinnati

Sure, everyone is all bummed that Ohio State shanked a potential game winning field goal to go to the College Football Championship the moment Ohio sports betting launched, but at least Pete Rose thinks the Reds are going to win the World Series!

The vaunted Cincinnati Reds alum placed the first legal wager at Hard Rock Cincinnati at 12:01 a.m., betting on the Reds to win the World Series in 2023.

Sadly, most Reds fans know deep in their hearts that Rose just threw his money out the window. But who cares! Online and retail sports betting is now fully legal in Ohio.

At least this is one bet in Cincinnati Rose made that we can be fully sure is legal.

Long journey to launch

Ohio legislators passed the state’s sports betting bill in December 2021.

Members of the Ohio House and Senate approved HB 29  on Dec. 8 and was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine not shortly thereafter.

Despite the approval, expectations were dampened when Ohio legislators announced that sports betting would launch “no later than Jan. 1, 2023.”

It would be nearly six more months before confirmation that Ohio sports betting would launch at exactly 12:01 a.m. on the first day of 2023.

"So, does Ohio State have a shot?"

Talk to anyone outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium — no matter which school in red they’re supporting — and they’ll ask you the same thing.

“So, does Ohio State have a shot?”

Sixty minutes of football in the College Football Playoff semifinal at Mercedes-Benz Stadium will determine that. One thing we do know is that the notion of a Georgia-dominated crowd that many expected for the in-state Dawgs might’ve been premature. Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan told Saturday Down South ahead of Saturday night’s matchup that he thought and hoped Ohio State fans would represent at least 30% of the crowd. If the pregame vibes surrounding the stadium were any indication, it’s safe to say Ohio State fans will exceed that.

The question, of course, is whether or not that’ll matter. After all, this is Georgia’s home away from home. The Dawgs have 2 victories in Atlanta this season alone, both of which were lopsided matchups against top-15 teams. Can the Dawgs complete the trifecta and defend their title in Los Angeles? Or is Ohio State about to take a page out of the 2017 Alabama playbook and stun the Dawgs in their backyard?

Coming off the devastating Michigan loss in Columbus, expectations feel low for Ohio State fans, despite a pregame spread that went from Georgia -6.5 to -4.5 on Saturday. Does Vegas know something? Or are oddsmakers perhaps just wishing a rare close semifinal game — only 3 semifinal games have been decided by 1 score during the 8 years of the 4-team Playoff — into existence?

An entertaining 60 minutes awaits.

Ohio Sports Betting: Caesars Sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse 'almost here'

The Caesars Sportsbook at the Cleveland Cavaliers Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse will not be open during Ohio’s 12:01 a.m. sports betting launch, but according to the operator it will be open soon in the New Year.

Caesars Sportsbook and the Cavaliers both posted videos previewing the new sportsbook at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse and promised it is “almost here” for 2023.

Who doesn’t love a good cryptic tweet on New Year’s Eve to get the blood pumping?

The Cavaliers are still searching for a sports betting operator to run its online sports betting program, as its original partner Fubo Gaming announced it would cease operations back in October.

While most Ohio professional sports franchises have embraced sports betting and will feature sportsbooks in their facilities, the only confirmed sportsbook that will be taking bets on Jan. 1 is the BetMGM Sportsbook at the Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ball Park.

The book will open tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. and will select one of its longtime season ticket holders to place the first wager at the stadium.

Ohio Sports Betting: Line movement in the Ohio State vs. Georgia game

There was talk this morning of some line movement for the Ohio State vs. Georgia game. Note the tweet below, and even the ESPN College GameDay crew mentioned the line movement on the air this morning.

Doing a quick check at both DraftKings and Fanduel, I can confirm that both books have Georgia now favored by 5.5. These books were at 6.5 and 6 just a few hours ago. We’ll continue to monitor the line movement all the way up until kickoff at the Peach Bowl.

Ohio Sports Betting: Sharp money on Ohio State?

While bettors in the state of Ohio might not be able to make their bets until Ohio sports betting launches at midnight, it’s not stopping the sharp money apparently elsewhere in the country eyeing Ohio State in tonight’s huge Peach Bowl matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs.

According to BetMGM, the sharp money is on Ohio State. Does this mean experts expect the Buckeyes to win the game? Not necessarily, as we know the Dawgs are favored, so it might just mean the sharps believe it’ll be closer than the six-point spread.

Either way, hopefully we’re in for an exciting College Football Playoff game as we countdown the launch of Ohio sports betting late tonight.

So You're Saying There's a Chance... Live Bets on Ohio State vs. Georgia?

It’s possible. But highly unlikely.

Yes, the timing of the College Football Playoff Game with Ohio State vs. Georgia kicking off at 8:00 p.m. eastern time and the launch of Ohio sports betting coming at 12:01 a.m. is either incredibly ironic or some sick joke by the regulators. Either way, once Ohio State got into the CFP, potential Ohio bettors immediately began speculating on the possibility of getting legal bets in on the big Ohio State Buckeyes game.

Could the game run long? Overtime? Would operators accept live bets starting at 12:01 a.m. on the game if the game extends past midnight? There’s a remote possibility, but it’s a big of a long shot.

In 2018, the national championship game went to overtime and clocked in at just under four hours. Multiple Ohio State games this season have gone over 3.5 hours, including a 3 hour, 59 minute game against Wisconsin earlier in the year.

You’re going to need a lot of passing, a lot of touchdowns, a lengthy half time and probably overtime.

We’ll be monitoring this situation closely, and update our coverage with possible live bet options should this unlikely scenario materialize.

In the meantime, Ohio sports bettors can look to the Browns vs. Commanders tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. eastern, and of course the big Bengals vs. Bills game on Monday night.

  • Over/Under: o62.5 (-106), u62.5 (-114)
