It’ll be an all-orange party in Hawaii this hoops season at the 2023 Maui Invitational.
Tennessee is the SEC representative for this season’s edition of the annual tournament, which is set to be held from November 20-22.
The field has been set for some time now: Tennessee, UCLA, Syracuse, Purdue, Kansas, Marquette, Chaminade and Gonzaga. On Monday, sources told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein that the bracket for the tournament has been unveiled, revealing Tennessee’s first round matchup and path to the championship game.
The Vols will start against Syracuse and, should they win, face the winner of Purdue and Gonzaga. Here are the remaining matchups in order:
- Kansas vs. Chaminade
- UCLA vs. Marquette
- Tennessee vs. Syracuse
- Purdue vs. Gonzaga
Syracuse is a bit of an enigma this upcoming season. For the first time since 1975 the Orange will not be coached by Jim Boeheim, who retired at the end of last season. Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes will face off instead against newly-hired HC Adrian Autry, who had worked under Boeheim since 2011.
Purdue and Gonzaga need little introduction. The Bulldogs and Boilermakers routinely have some of the best squads in the country and are both well-coached.
The Boilermakers return big man Zach Edey for one last dance in college basketball after Purdue was shocked by Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Tennessee, Marquette, UCLA, Purdue, Gonzaga and Kansas are all almost surely going to be ranked within the top 25 when November 20 rolls around.
Maui always delivers. Folks, this should be a fun one.
