Auburn RHP Casey Mize parlayed an outstanding 2018 season into becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, going to the Detroit Tigers.
On Monday, it was reported that he signed his first professional contract, but he won’t be making as much as he could have.
Mize won’t be going hungry any time soon, but he reportedly signed a contract that gives him a $7.5 million signing bonus — nearly $600,000 under his slot value:
Mize's $7.5 million signing bonus sets a record under the current bonus pool rules. He signed for $596,300 under slot value.

Mize’s record signing bonus likely played a part in the rest of his contract being under slot value, so it seems he and his agent preferred to get as much money up front as possible.
Now that the contract has been sorted out, Mize can get to work for his new squad. It’ll be interesting to follow his path through the minors and how long it takes him to reach the majors.
