Steelers writer doesn’t expect ex-Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs to land backup role

There’s no question as to who the starting quarterback is for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger has that spot locked down.
However, the Steelers selected former Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft to compete for the No. 2 spot with current backup Landry Jones.
But, according to one reporter, Dobbs likely won’t be ready to be Big Ben’s backup until 2018 at the earliest.
In a Q&A session, Steelers.com writer Bob Labriola was asked whether he thought Dobbs could land the backup role in 2017 or not, and gave a strong answer:
“There is no battle,” Labriola writes. “Landry Jones will be the backup quarterback, and Josh Dobbs will be No. 3. Maybe that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s the truth.”
Dobbs finished his Tennessee career with 7,138 passing yards and 53 touchdowns. He also added 2,160 yards and 32 scores on the ground.
Though he might not be ready for a big role in Pittsburgh this fall, he could still develop into a solid player for the Steelers in the future.
