A key player for South Carolina who’s been suspended the last two and a half months following an arrest for assault and burglary charges has been reinstated, coach Will Muschamp announced on Tuesday.
DB Javon Charleston met with Muschamp to go over the case and his situation, and Muschamp said playing time would be determined. He added he hasn’t determined Charleston’s status for Saturday’s game against Georgia.
Muschamp said as a consequence of Charleston’s inappropriate actions in June, he entered into a pre-trial intervention program.
“I met with him on Sunday and discussed his situation at length,” Muschamp. “After those meetings, I decided to reinstate him to the team. As long as he enters the PTI, handles his business and does things that I’m asking him to do as well, then we’ll decide on as far as playing time and those things are concerned. We’ll decide at the appropriate time and that’s not right now.
“Our players understand we’ve got a very high expectation for their behavior and representing the University of South Carolina and the need to handle themselves on and off the field and there’s consequences for their actions and I really think my track record speaks for itself on discipline.”
According to a police report obtained by The State, the incident happened on June 17.
Charleston was text messaging with a female, and when she didn’t respond, he allegedly went to the place she was staying and entered around 2 a.m. When Charleston showed up, he got into an altercation with the female and another man in her bed. Charleston chased the man out of the house, and the female locked Charleston out of the house. He then tried to gain entry, per the report, and the female ran out of the back door. Charleston then allegedly caught up to her, grabbed her by the neck and pushed her down the stairs.
After giving his story to police, the female wanted to press charges, and Charleston was arrested.
While suspended, Charleston didn’t take part in any football activities.
The Illinois native has played wide receiver and defensive back during his career, and he recorded six tackles and recovered two fumbles in 2017.
