Grayson McCall was taken to the hospital on Saturday following a nasty hit in NC State’s game against Wake Forest. Given his history with concussions, there was immediate concern for the quarterback following a hit that popped his helmet off.
Shortly after the game ended, NC State shared an update saying that McCall had already been released from the hospital.
“He is alert and in good spirits,” the program said in a statement, “and all scans were normal.”

Immediately after the game, NC State head coach Dave Doeren told reporters that all the reports from the hospital “are positive.”
McCall returned to the starting lineup on Saturday after missing the previous 2 games with an undisclosed injury. He was knocked out of the game on the seventh offensive play of the day for the Wolfpack and replaced by CJ Bailey.
“[He] was cleared and had a great week of practice,” Doeren said after the game. “He’s our starting quarterback. He’s a captain. … He was ready to play and he took a really vicious hit. Sometimes football is a very violent sport, at times, and that was a big hit that he took.
“I hate it for him. You just hate to see a guy get hit like that. And obviously the results of hits like that are scary.”
The hit occurred on a scramble for McCall that ended with him colliding with 2 Wake Forest defenders. He fumbled the ball and hit the ground hard. Medical staff tended to him on the field for several minutes, stabilized his neck, and eventually carted him off the field. McCall was seen hugging his parents and then signaling to the crowd on the field before being taken off.
At the time of his departure, he’d completed 3 of his 5 passes for 42 yards. NC State went on to lose the game, 34-30.
