A fourth and 24 play didn’t fall Clemson’s way, and Notre Dame secured a monumental win over the No. 1 Tigers, the first time the Fighting Irish beat a No. 1 team in South Bend in 27 years.

Notre Dame won 47-40 in double overtime after the Fighting Irish answered Clemson’s first score in overtime with two straight touchdowns from Kyren Williams. Williams had three touchdowns in the game and 140 rushing yards.

No. 1 teams fell to 5-3 at Notre Dame. The last time was 2005 against Southern Cal, the “Bush Push” game. This is the first Irish victory against a No. 1 team in South Bend since Florida State in 1993.

The game lived up to the hype, and encouraged a lot talk of a likely rematch in the ACC Championship game. Clemson came into the game with a top 10 offense, while Notre Dame had a top 10 defense.

It was also a game of streaks. Notre Dame extended its winning streak to 13 games, which is the longest in the FBS. The Irish’s 23-game home winning streak is tied for second among active streaks behind Clemson’s 27. The Tigers had their streak of 39 straight non-bowl games snapped and fell to 20-2 in November games since 2015.

Clemson true freshman D.J. Uiagalelei playing in place of Trevor Lawrence, who was out because of COVID-19 protocols, kept up the offensive momentum. Clemson came in averaging 46.1 points, 341.4 passing yards and 508.0 total yards per game. On the other side, Led by S Kyle Hamilton, LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and DE Daelin Hayes, the Irish allowed just 10.3 points, 173.5 passing yards and 267.2 total yards per game.

Uiagalelei was 29-for-44 passing for 439 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers rallied with 20 points in the second half, but it was Notre Dame QB Ian Book, who found Avery Davis for a touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
