Despite consistently destroying his competition in college, AJ Brown has lost some hype during the pre-draft process thanks in part to his teammate DK Metcalf’s incredible performance at the 2019 NFL Combine. Based on what he had to say during the Ole Miss Pro Day event, Brown probably doesn’t have much respect for anyone that judges prospects based on their 40-yard dash times.

Metcalf may have been the talk of the combine but it was Brown that racked up 189 catches for 2,984 yards and 19 touchdowns in his three seasons in Oxford. In contrast, Metcalf put up 67 career catches for 1,228 yards and 14 scores. Metcalf also failed to finish the season healthy after suffering a neck injury.

While Brown didn’t attempt to disrespect Metcalf’s combine performance during his media availability from the Ole Miss Pro Day, instead he supported his teammate and predicted he would have a lengthy NFL career, the junior receiver did offer up this take on the importance of drill work and testing.

“My opinion, your 40-yard dash and stuff like that, it doesn’t tell you if you’re a good football player. The film speaks to that. That’s your resume, that’s your biggest resume,” Brown said. “I had to do it, I had to get it over with but I wasn’t big on that; wasn’t my main focus. At the end of the day, I’m a football player — we gotta run routes and get open. So that’s what I work on.”

Naturally, Brown was then asked if he considers himself a first-round prospect, to which he said he believes he should not only be taken in the first round but he should be taken first overall.

“I think I should be picked first. But I can’t control none of that. What I can control, I can control,” Brown said. “You know, I put everything out there and of course I feel like I’m a first-round receiver.”

It will be interesting to see which Ole Miss receiver is selected first in the 2019 NFL Draft and which player goes on to the better pro career but the reality is it only takes one team to fall in love with a prospect and Metcalf turned enough heads at the combine that it seems likely he moved up several draft boards with his performance.

We’ll know soon enough if teams value production or workouts more heavily based on where these two are selected.
