From 2012 to 2016, Dave Wommack served as the defensive coordinator for the Ole Miss Rebels.

However, this offseason, he’s spending a lot of time around the Rebels’ Week 1 opponents — the South Alabama Jaguars.

According to AL.com, Wommack has been helping his son, Kane, who is the South Alabama defensive coordinator. Kane said his dad has been giving him pointers and providing advice ahead of the start of the 2017 season:

“I think they call them senior interns,” Kane Wommack said with a laugh. “He’s here for a couple of days. I did ask him to give me his thoughts on where we are as a defense. He has so much wisdom and experience after 38 years. He knows the things you need to do to prepare for a season.”

Kane did say his dad wasn’t providing specific information about the Rebels, but added that Dave has been a valuable resource this summer:

“We’ve kind of stayed away from the whole Ole Miss thing, because I know he cares about those guys,” Kane Wommack said. “But as a team, blood is thicker than water at the end of the day.”

The Jaguars open their season on Saturday, Sept. 2, against the Rebels in Oxford. Whether Dave’s advice helps them pull off an upset like they did against Mississippi State last season or not remains to be seen.
