Former Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta is currently in Oxford, according to a report by 247Sports’ Ole Miss Spirit.

Per the report, Matta’s reps reached out to Ole Miss to express his interest in the head coaching vacancy. Matta, of course, had a huge career at Ohio State, and he’s currently the winningest coach in Buckeyes program history with a 439-154 (.740) overall record.

On June 5, 2017, Matta parted ways with OSU for health issues, and it’s unknown if his health is still a major issue. The 2016-17 season stands as the only season that Matta didn’t record 20 wins as OSU’s head coach.

Interestingly, with the FBI’s investigation into college basketball, it’s been rumored that as many as 20 current coaches could lose their jobs. That would obviously cause chaos, but if Matta is serious about returning to college basketball — he sat out this season, he could have many options.

In addition to Ohio State, Matta has been a head coach at Xavier (2001-04) and Butler (2000-01).

Former Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy initially announced he would step down at the end of the season; however, Kennedy ended up stepping down immediately on February 19.
