Jordan Ta’amu and Tua Tagovailoa both grew up in Hawaii. The duo, along with Tagovailoa’s father and brother, even played football together on the islands.

Years later, Ta’amu and Tagovailoa are both quarterbacks in the SEC. And when Ole Miss and Alabama play in Oxford, Miss., on Sept. 15, the two close friends could face off for the first time in their college careers.

During SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Ta’amu discussed his friendship with Tagovailoa in an interview with CBS 42, a local TV affiliate in Central Alabama.

“Our relationship is great,” Ta’amu told CBS 42. “We trained with each other when we were younger, just growing up, me, him, his brother and his dad. We would always go out in the park and train with the kids. Him being a fellow Samoan guy out here in the SEC with me is amazing. I just want to wish him the best. I’m just excited to play against Alabama, hopefully, he’s the starting quarterback so it’ll be Hawaii vs. Hawaii. Hopefully our family and our friends would watch that game. I’m excited, and I know he’s excited.”

While Ta’amu will likely be the starting quarterback for the Rebels, barring any injury setback, Tagovailoa’s role is less certain. Tagovailoa helped lead the Crimson Tide to a national title in last season’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game, but Jalen Hurts, who started every game last year, is also back at Alabama.

However, if Ta’amu and Tagovailoa do go head-to-head this season, don’t expect any trash talking to occur.

“I don’t think there’s going to be any smack talk, because we’re all family and friends, but it is going to be exciting and it is going to be a good game,” Ta’amu said.
