Amid reports that Ole Miss junior running back Jordan Wilkins has been ruled out for the season, the school officially announced the news Thursday morning.

In a prepared statement, the school addressed Wilkins status as such:

“Jordan Wilkins will miss the 2016 regular season after not meeting NCAA standards for progress toward degree. An appeal was filed with the NCAA for Jordan’s reinstatement based on an administrative error but was denied this week. The athletics department takes full responsibility and holds itself accountable when situations like this occur with our student athletes. We will support Jordan to the fullest during this time and look forward to seeing him return to the field.”

With Wilkins now officially ruled ineligible, the Rebels return only three running backs that had a combined 107 carries last season – senior Akeem Judd (78 carries), junior Eugene Brazley (22 carries) and sophomore D.K. Buford (seven carries).

Ole Miss will now likely look to freshmen D’Vaughn Pennamon and Eric Swinney to shoulder much of the running back duties in Oxford this season.
