A bizarre sequence took place in Ole Miss’ showdown with the Memphis Tigers Saturday night, and it may have cost the Rebels points on the scoreboard.

Ole Miss was deep in the red zone when quarterback Bo Wallace threw a bubble screen outside to wideout Cody Core, who dropped the pass, which seemingly ended the play. Wallace threw the ball from the shotgun, while Core caught the ball at the line of scrimmage, three yards ahead of his quarterback.

Nevertheless, the referees ruled the play to be a backward pass and fumble, which Memphis returned to Ole Miss territory. Freeze was furious with the call, and did not hesitate to let the officials know what he thought of their ruling. The staff was penalized with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and even after the refs took another look and overturned the call — ruling it an incomplete pass — the call on staff stood.

As a result, the Ole Miss offense moved back 15 yards and would later have to settle for a field goal on a drive that appeared destined for the end zone.
