With National Signing Day about a month away, Ole Miss is looking forward to finalizing its 2016 recruiting class. Although Hugh Freeze and his coaching staff apparently have landed the nation’s third-best recruiting class and the SEC’s best, there are still a few positions where the Rebels will looks to recruit better in the future.

Here’s a look at some of Ole Miss’ top recruiting needs moving forward.

LINEBACKER

Losing after 2015: C.J. Johnson, Denzel Nkemdiche, Christian Russell

Freeze has brought in blue-chip recruits at a lot of positions, but he has never landed one of the nation’s top linebackers.

David Luafatasaga, a four-star from Yuma, Arizona and a member of the Rebels’ 2016 class, is the highest-rated LB prospect that Freeze has recruited to Oxford.

The Landshark defense only requires two linebackers, but Ole Miss will be losing two key seniors in the middle after this season — Johnson and Nkemdiche.

RUNNING BACK

Losing after 2015: Jaylen Walton

Kind of like linebacker, Freeze hasn’t brought a top-notch RB prospect to Oxford yet. The Rebels backfield never found its workhorse this season and will likely still be a committee next season with a couple of former three- and four-star recruits battling it out for carries.

Freeze’s offense is a bit throw-heavy to begin with and the Rebels should have an excellent quarterback for the foreseeable future with Chad Kelly and 2016 five-star recruit Shea Patterson.

DEFENSIVE BACK

Losing after 2015: Mike Hilton, Trae Elston, Chief Brown, Tony Conner (maybe)

The Rebels are losing some serious talent in the secondary after 2015. Elston is Ole Miss’ second-leading tackler with 66 and leads the team in interceptions (4) this season. Hilton is the Rebels’ third-leading tackler and also has two interceptions and 1.5 sacks to add to his senior-year stats. Brown also contributed plenty to the secondary by playing in all 12 games this year with one start and one interception.

Conner might be the best but played just five games this year because of a season-ending injury. Freeze recently said he expects Conner to come back for his senior season next year but with his talent and good rehab, there’s still a chance he could head to the NFL.

The Rebels’ 2016 class has four-star CB Jaylon Jones coming in but there’s not much past him. Players such as Tony Bridges, Kendarius Webster and C.J. Hampton will be back to contribute, but Ole Miss could still use more depth in the secondary, especially with the five-defensive back sets they primarily like to use.

Other positions Ole Miss should target: DT, WR

CURRENT RECRUITING CLASS

As previously stated, Ole Miss’ 2016 recruiting class is the cream of the crop, ranking third nationally and first in the SEC.

It is headlined by five-star OT Gregory Little and five-star QB Shea Patterson. Little is the nation’s No. 2 ranked player and Patterson is No. 5.

Four-star WR DeKaylin Metcalf was also a big in-state grab. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound target could fill the void left by Laquon Treadwell. DT Benito Jones is another four-star Mississippi native who will be playing in Oxford next season.
